Karen Moyer Karen Moyer and her husband, World Series Champion pitcher Jamie Moyer, are widely recognized for their philanthropic work surrounding causes that aid children. In 2000, Jamie and Karen founded The Moyer Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide comfort and support to children enduring a time of profound physical, emotional or financial distress. Predicated upon the Moyer’s passion and the community’s support, The Moyer Foundation has raised more than $16 million to assist over 170 different non-profit organizations that serve the needs of children in severe distress. In addition to supporting organizations through grants, The Moyer Foundation created and funds Camp Erin, the largest national network of bereavement camps for children and teens; Camp Mariposa, a camp for children affected by addiction in their families; and supports many community partnerships, including The Gregory Fund (in partnership with Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center) for early cancer-detection research and The Moyer Foundation Endowment for Excellence in Pediatric Palliative Care with Seattle’s Children’s Hospital. In 2007, Karen and Jamie launched the “Campaign for Kids,” a nationwide fundraising effort designed to open more than 50 new Camp Erins in cities throughout the country, including every Major League Baseball community. Karen is a versatile woman who excels as a business person, mother, wife and philanthropist. Her efforts to improve the community stretch beyond her commitments to The Moyer Foundation as the mother of seven children also serves as a board member for numerous health and children’s organizations. Additionally, Karen is the Owner and Lead LeMond Fitness Certified Instructor of “Go Legs,” an indoor cycling studio in Seattle, Washington that she opened in 2006 following the closing of the local health club and the demand for cycling classes in her community. Karen also founded and runs Magnolia Baseball, a youth baseball organization whose goal is to develop young men using the game of baseball as a tool for preparation in the areas of teamwork and life. Karen’s work is guided by her belief that every child deserves a chance to lead a safe, happy and healthy life. In 2008, Karen arranged for her, Jamie and their seven children to spend the Christmas holiday in Guatemala, one of the ten poorest countries in Latin America. In September of 2007, the Moyer’s adopted their daughter, Yenifer, from Hannah's Hope in Guatemala. Karen organized donations from close friends and family and the Moyers personally delivered the donations to Hannah’s Hope. While they spent most of their time at Hannah’s Hope loving all of the orphans, Karen, Jamie and the older boys took part in other mission work including a visit to the dump to help many more in need. Karen is a 1987 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. Her father is former Notre Dame Men’s Basketball Coach and current ESPN analyst, Digger Phelps, while her mother is Teresa Godwin Phelps, an established author and activist for women’s rights who currently serves as a law professor at American University. |
